NEW YORK- Despite all of the rumors swirling on what the San Antonio Spurs would do with their #4 pick in the first round of the 2024 NBA draft, the team decided to remain at #4 and selected UConn’s Stephon Castle to join the team.
Monica McNutt of ESPN interviewed Castle immediately after the pick was made and asked kind of player the Spurs team would be getting by picking Castle at four. Castle explained:
“They’re obviously [Spurs] getting a winner, I learned how to win last year so i’M coming in with that kind of mindset. And you know, just to have a teammate like [Victor Wembanyama] next to you, that will open up the floor for you to grow and expand your game. So I just can’t wait to get out there.”
Castle self-described his best attributes as his passing ability and his defense - both qualities the Spurs organization are notorious for holding in high regard. His skills could potentially build to being a huge supporting role in the Spurs system.
His accolades include being the 2024 Big East Freshman of the Year, 2024 NCAA East Region All-Regional Team, and the 2024 NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team. He was also on this past year’s UConn NCAA National Championship team. Castle is the second freshmen ever from UConn to be drafted (the first was Andre Drummond in 2012)
Castle’s offensive ability as shooting guard showed during this past season and he was considered on of the best outside shooters on the team and had sharp defensive skills. He is known for being a lockdown perimeter defender, something that the Spurs have struggled with in previous seasons.
Castle averaged 11.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. His turnover ratio is low, and he shot 47.2 percent from the floor and 75.5 percent from the free throw line.
He attended Newton High School in Covington, Georgia. See some of his UConn highlights below:
