Chris Paul signs one-year, $11 million deal with San Antonio Spurs
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports veteran Guard signs with the Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs now have veteran guard Chris Paul added to their roster, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
After trading Rob Dillingham, the 8th overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft, the Spurs made a few trades and cleared an additional $26 million in cap space for the season. Per the new NBA Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Spurs were required to spend 90% of their cap space prior to the first game of the regular season.
In February 2024, Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama spoke on the lack of a veteran presence in the locker room:
“Yeah, It's definitely a challenge. But we do have some vets who show the example,” he said of San Antonio's ever-young roster. “But, of course…As a young team, sometimes it's hard to do without this quantity of guidance from veterans, for example.”
Being without veterans was evident on the Spurs’ roster last season. The Spurs were the second youngest team in 2023-24, and after trading away veteran players like Doug McDermott, Keita Bates-Diop, Jakob Poeltl, and Josh Richardson over the past few years, many wondered which veteran the Spurs might sign to assist the young Spurs roster in the future.
San Antonio also started Power Forward Jeremy Sochan several times at point guard last season. Despite the rotation experiments on the roster, the Spurs struggled to make their mark in the Western Conference last season, and ended the year at number 11 in the west.
Enter Chris Paul.
In 2017, Chris Paul was reportedly interested in signing with the Spurs, but decisions regarding LaMarcus Aldridge’s future with the team fizzled that interest out.
Today, TNT’s Chris Haynes reported Chris Paul intended to sign with the Spurs. The deal was confirmed hours later.
Paul reportedly signed a one-year $11 million contract with the Spurs. He is also expected to be taking a $19 million pay cut to play under Spurs’ head coach Gregg Popovich and alongside generational talent Victor Wembanyama.
